The first part of the triathlon is the swim. Most swimmers make sure that they have a good swim cap, goggles, and a nose clip, as well as a wet suit or swim suit. You may be required to wear a swim cap provided by organizers of the event - these brightly colored caps can signify different categories and are made to be easily seen.
It’s a poor idea to use a wet suit designed for snorkeling and similar activities. Sleeves prevent efficient arm movements and make swimming less comfortable. A specialized triathlon wet suit is a better idea. These suits are made from a softer rubber around the shoulders, or may be sleeveless. Longer zippers and extra zippers make it quicker and easier to change out of the suit after the swim. The surface of a triathlon wet suit is also smoother to allow for faster swimming.
Appropriate helmets and cycling clothing will also be needed for the cycling portion of the event. Triathlon helmets are often aerodynamic, and triathlon clothes should fit closely to the body to create the most aerodynamic shape.
Triathletes need appropriate shoes, as well. Triathlon shoes are a lot like cycling shoes - they have cleats that allow them to clip into pedals. These shoes are padded to allow for comfort, since most triathletes will not be wearing socks after swimming. Many also have holes that will allow water to drain out, and they’re secured with a minimum of straps to allow the athlete to fasten them as quickly as possible.
