The cycling portion of the race requires a triathlon bike. These are a variant of road bikes, but include what are called aero bars or tri bars. Aerodynamics are an important part of the cycling portion of the triathlon. This means that the frame components of a triathlon bike will be oval in cross section instead of round, and that the wheels on these bikes may have fewer spokes or be in disc form. These bikes are a lot like the bikes found in time trial races.
Tri bars are designed to reduce drag, and are attached to the handlebars. They keep the elbows closer to the body, and lowers the cyclist’s torso. Aerodynamics are a common focus of triathletes, since this can affect performance and speed. Appropriate helmets and cycling clothing will also be needed. Triathlon helmets are often aerodynamic, and triathlon clothes should fit closely to the body to create the most aerodynamic shape.
