Training for triathlon

If you want to feel the tremendous accomplishment of completing your first Triathlon there are only 3 things you need to know. They are how to get started with your training for triathlon, understand your weaknesses in each of the events, and how to find and choose your first triathlon.

Getting started is easy but to keep going with your training for triathlon is far harder. What you need is a plan and you may be able to be given a plan from your gym that is dedicated to triathletes, so ask the next time you go. Alternatively you can look for one on the internet as there are many resources available online. (We will soon be putting a plan together on this website for beginners all the way up to ironman events). Of course make sure that your gym has a pool! Any plan you choose must allow you to build up slowly to the day of the event.

Which event is your weakest? For most people its the swimming. Its important for you to build up the right muscle groups. What you will need to do is to focus on building your upper body with weights. If its the cycling or the running then it will be your calves. Be sure to work on your weakest event first.

To keep you motivated its important to decide on the event you want to participate in. You will want to start with either a mini or sprint triathlon. Once you know the distances for the three events you can then prepare yourself you will then know if you follow a good plan exactly what you need to do each week. To find a triathlon to participate in you can check our triathlon schedule page which will lists triathlons for this year and websites for you to be able to find a triathlon in your area. You will also find on our events page groups and associations that sponsor triathlons in your area.

Planning your training is essential as it will help give you the discipline to keep going. Understanding your weakest of the three events will mean that you will focus on building up the right muscle groups as your weakest event is likely to cause you the most problems for you time on the day of the triathlon. Picking your event early will keep you motivated, so look for one near you using the resources as outlined in this article. As a beginner triathlete putting these things together will ensure that your first triathlon is not only a great accomplishment but fun as well.
